What are the Internal Martial Arts?
| |
Internal martial arts, (Tai Chi, Ba Gua, Xing yi)are based on the principals
of knowing yourself rather than knowing your opponent. To know yourself means you must understand
how you move, how your energy flows, how to project your intent (yi), how to merge with your opponent,
and how to set up a fighting strategy that gives you the advantage. All of these basic skills must be
integrated into your total being.
When you engage an opponent the basic concepts must be automatic and exact.
Internal arts is NOT application of technique driven. It is spontaneous and flowing movements driven by and in
response to your opponent.
Utilizing the basics allow you to engage and merge with your opponent while subtly controlling the environment.
Therefore consideravle emphasis is placed on learning the basic movements. This is an individual practice, no opponent needed,
that is applied in all your activities. It must be ingrained in your mind and your body.
But just integrating with your opponent is not enough, therefore we have a variety ways to
injure or kill and opponent once you have control. Some of these techinques are external and some are internal. we use Chin Na for
capture, controll and set up, throwing (64 basic throwing techniques), Fa Jing and Inch Power strikes and kicks for penetration.
The three internal martial arts, tai Chi, Ba Gua, Xing Yi provide the elements of movement and style but the end product is much
more than the total of these three.

The Internal Martial Arts

IMAA was founded by Master Marvin Quon to bring together Internal Martial Art Instructors and promote the teaching of the Internal Martial Arts way of fighting method. Emphasis is placed on inter-school
cooperation and cross training of students. Students have the opportunity to experience and train in the different styles taught by the association schools. IMAA does not run the associate schools
but rather promotes all members schools.
